"Tubthumping" is a song released by British rock band Chumbawamba from their 8th studio album, Tubthumper (1997). It is the band's most successful single, peaking at number ii on the UK Singles Chart. It topped the charts in Australia, Canada, Republic of ireland, Italy, New Zealand and hit number half-dozen on the U.s.a. Billboard Hot 100[1] (although it topped the US Modern Rock and Mainstream Peak 40 charts). At the 1998 Brit Awards, "Tubthumping" was nominated for the Brit Laurels for Best British Unmarried. Information technology sold 880,000 copies in the Great britain.[ii]

Groundwork [edit]

The song was the group's pb single from Tubthumper, their major-characterization debut.[3] Information technology was released on eleven August 1997.[4] [5] Vocaliser Dunstan Bruce retrospectively observed that, before the group wrote it, they "were in a mess: we had get directionless and disparate". He credited "Tubthumping" with changing that, telling The Guardian, "It's not our most political or all-time song, but it brought united states of america back together. The song is near united states of america – as a class and as a band. The beauty of information technology was we had no thought how big it would be."[half-dozen]

Writing and composition [edit]

A Leeds pub chosen the Fforde Grene served as the group'south inspiration for the vocal; guitarist Boff Whalley told The Guardian that it was written virtually "the resilience of ordinary people";[6] musically, "Tubthumping" is a trip the light fantastic-rock, alternative rock, and dance-punk song in D major.[7] [8] [9] [10] [11]

Critical reception [edit]

Larry Flick from Billboard wrote, "Some records merely demand attention: 'Tubthumping' is one of the rare few. You can spend three times the track's running time plucking out the seemingly disparate sounds and assorted genre references—starting with the forceful alterna-rock guitar scratches, the hip-hop-derived beats, and the swing-mode horns. Holding it all together are the kind of rousing, gang-like chants that you hear at football game games. Sounds odd, eh? Well, yous won't soon forget this jam after offset listen. And you'll likely be hearing it on pop and mod rock stations for months to come. If this precious stone is indicative of the tone of the act's forthcoming anthology, it should be quite a head trip."[12] A reviewer from Daily Record described it as an "irritating catchy drinking canticle from the anarchist band".[13] It was besides called a "raucous canticle".[14] Pan-European magazine Music & Media said, "Subsequently a decade and a half spent as indie heroes this commonage is likely to break into the mainstream in a big manner".[15] Ian Hyland of the Sunday Mirror rated it viii out of ten, writing, "Sing a terrace dirge, mention lager and the rugby boys will be making boozed-up human pyramids on the dance floor in seconds. And you'll have a monster striking – good work, chum."[sixteen] Troy J. Augusto from Diverseness declared it every bit a "drinking-and-dancing canticle" and "the quirk striking of the flavour".[17]

In The Village Vocalization's Pazz & Jop poll for 1997, "Tubthumping" was voted the 2nd-best single of the yr.[18] Australian radio station Triple J ranked information technology No. 3 in its Triple J Hottest 100 for the same year.[nineteen] Writer Bruce Pollock included it in his 2005 book "The 7,500 Well-nigh Important Songs of 1944-2000".[20] "Tubthumping" also placed at No. 12 in Rolling Rock 's 2007 list of the "twenty Most Abrasive Songs"[21] and at No. eight in the magazine's 2011 list of the "Top 10 1-Hitting Wonders of All Time".[22]
